Amazon<\/strong>\u00a0said this week\u00a0its<\/strong>\u00a0facial\u00a0recognition software<\/strong>,\u00a0Rekognition<\/strong>,\u00a0can detect<\/strong>\u00a0a person’s\u00a0fear<\/strong>.\u00a0Rekognition<\/strong>\u00a0is used for facial analysis or sentiment analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u00a0claims<\/strong>\u00a0it\u00a0can<\/strong>\u00a0accurately identify seven emotions: happy<\/strong>, sad<\/strong>, angry<\/strong>, surprised<\/strong>, disgusted<\/strong>, calm <\/strong>and confused<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It seems that just like bees, Amazon can sense your fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because nothing says “nightmare scenario” quite like a giant tech corporation everyone uses knowing what you’re feeling, Amazon announced on Monday that\u00a0Rekognition<\/a>, its\u00a0controversial facial recognition tool, can now detect a person’s fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The update includes “improved accuracy for emotion detection (for all 7 emotions: \u2018Happy\u2019, \u2018Sad\u2019, \u2018Angry\u2019, \u2018Surprised\u2019, \u2018Disgusted\u2019, \u2018Calm\u2019 and \u2018Confused\u2019)” but, just for kicks, I guess, “added a new emotion: \u2018Fear\u2019.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’d say it’s time to worry about things getting all 1984<\/em> up in here, but there are issues<\/a> with Rekognition that have kept it from wider use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rekognition earned the ire of quite a few civil liberties organizations such as the ACLU, who as our Matt Binder pointed out last year<\/a>, called the technology “primed for abuse in the hands of governments” and warned that it \u201cposes a grave threat to communities, including people of color and immigrants.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that was after<\/em> the ACLU and Amazon tussled over Rekognition’s accuracy. In July 2018, the ACLU said it used the tool to identify members of Congress and it got 28 members wrong<\/a>. Additionally, six of those misidentified members were black, underscoring racial bias issues<\/a> that continue to plague facial recognition software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For its part, Amazon claimed the results were “misinterpreted”<\/a> and that, actually<\/em>, a 95 percent success rate is good for this software, which is primarily to be used for helping to narrow options down, not necessarily to provide perfect accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever the case, the fact remains that Rekognition is getting smarter and one step closer to going full HAL 9000<\/a> on us soon. Maybe it’s time to start freaking out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
