{"id":2821,"date":"2019-10-14T10:58:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T10:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/?p=2821"},"modified":"2019-09-12T17:15:34","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T17:15:34","slug":"amazon-claims-its-face-recognition-software-can-now-detect-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/technology\/amazon-claims-its-face-recognition-software-can-now-detect-fear\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon Claims Its Face Recognition Software Can Now Detect Fear!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Amazon<\/strong>\u00a0said this week\u00a0<strong>its<\/strong>\u00a0facial\u00a0<strong>recognition software<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Rekognition<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>can detect<\/strong>\u00a0a person&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>fear<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Rekognition<\/strong>\u00a0is used for facial analysis or sentiment analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u00a0<strong>claims<\/strong>\u00a0it\u00a0<strong>can<\/strong>\u00a0accurately identify seven emotions: <strong>happy<\/strong>, <strong>sad<\/strong>, <strong>angry<\/strong>, <strong>surprised<\/strong>, <strong>disgusted<\/strong>, <strong>calm <\/strong>and <strong>confused<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that just like bees, Amazon can sense your fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because nothing says &#8220;nightmare scenario&#8221; quite like a giant tech corporation everyone uses knowing what you&#8217;re feeling, Amazon announced on Monday that\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/rekognition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rekognition<\/a>, its\u00a0controversial facial recognition tool, can now detect a person&#8217;s fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The update includes &#8220;improved accuracy for emotion detection (for all 7 emotions: \u2018Happy\u2019, \u2018Sad\u2019, \u2018Angry\u2019, \u2018Surprised\u2019, \u2018Disgusted\u2019, \u2018Calm\u2019 and \u2018Confused\u2019)&#8221; but, just for kicks, I guess, &#8220;added a new emotion: \u2018Fear\u2019.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-attachment-id=\"2822\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/technology\/amazon-claims-its-face-recognition-software-can-now-detect-fear\/attachment\/twitterpost-amazonrekognition\/#main\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/TwitterPost-AmazonRekognition.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"525,470\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"TwitterPost-AmazonRekognition\" data-image-description=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/TwitterPost-AmazonRekognition-300x269.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/TwitterPost-AmazonRekognition.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"525\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/TwitterPost-AmazonRekognition.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/TwitterPost-AmazonRekognition.jpg 525w, https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/TwitterPost-AmazonRekognition-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/azoora.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/TwitterPost-AmazonRekognition-320x286.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d say it&#8217;s time to worry about things getting all&nbsp;<em>1984<\/em>&nbsp;up in here, but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/amazon-facial-recognition-ice\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">there are issues<\/a>&nbsp;with Rekognition that have kept it from wider use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rekognition earned the ire of quite a few civil liberties organizations such as the ACLU, who as our Matt Binder&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/orlando-documents-amazon-rekognition\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pointed out last year<\/a>, called the technology &#8220;primed for abuse in the hands of governments&#8221; and warned that it \u201cposes a grave threat to communities, including people of color and immigrants.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that was&nbsp;<em>after<\/em>&nbsp;the ACLU and Amazon tussled over Rekognition&#8217;s accuracy. In July 2018, the ACLU said it used the tool to identify members of Congress&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/amazon-rekognition-aclu-misidentify-congress-members\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and it got 28 members wrong<\/a>. Additionally, six of those misidentified members were black,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2015\/07\/01\/google-photos-black-people-gorillas\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">underscoring racial bias issues<\/a>&nbsp;that continue to plague facial recognition software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For its part, Amazon&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/blogs\/aws\/thoughts-on-machine-learning-accuracy\/?linkCode=w61&amp;imprToken=wbxuqvdVFo0HEhRrbNdh5g&amp;slotNum=0&amp;tag=mashable-editpost-20\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claimed the results were &#8220;misinterpreted&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;and that,&nbsp;<em>actually<\/em>, a 95 percent success rate is good for this software, which is primarily to be used for helping to narrow options down, not necessarily to provide perfect accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever the case, the fact remains that Rekognition is getting smarter and one step closer to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XDO8OYnmkNY\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">going full HAL 9000<\/a>&nbsp;on us soon.
