The search engine was founded in September 1998 by two PhD students,\u00a0Larry Page<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Sergey Brin<\/a>, in their dormitories at California\u2019s Stanford University<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having developed a search algorithm known as \u2018Backrub\u2019 two years earlier, Page and Brin chose the name Google for their new project because it recalled the word \u2018googol\u2019 \u2013 a mathematical term meaning \u201810 raised to the power of 100\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when the World Wide Web was still in its infancy, Page and Brin\u2019s lofty goal was to \u201corganise the world\u2019s information and make it universally accessible and useful\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although initially overshadowed by rival search engines such as Yahoo and Ask Jeeves, Google has grown to become the world\u2019s most popular website, with more than 63,000 searches<\/a> made every second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The verb \u2018google\u2019, meaning \u2018to search for something online\u2019, has become so widely used that it was\u00a0added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary<\/a>\u00a0and Oxford English Dictionary in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The date of Google\u2019s birthday has changed over the years without much explanation. Until 2005 the website celebrated its birthday on September 7, supposedly marking the day it became an incorporated company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the company actually filed incorporation papers<\/a> on September 4, 1998, though it has never used this date as its birthday. Since 2005 it has marked its birthday on September 8, September 26 and, more recently, September 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen is Google\u2019s birthday?
