new project because it recalled the word \u2018googol\u2019 \u2013 a mathematical term meaning \u201810 raised to the power of 100\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a time when the World Wide Web was still in its infancy, Page and Brin\u2019s lofty goal was to \u201corganise the world\u2019s information and make it universally accessible and useful\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although initially overshadowed by rival search engines such as Yahoo and Ask Jeeves, Google has grown to become&nbsp;the world\u2019s most popular website, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-now-handles-2-999-trillion-searches-per-year-250247\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 63,000 searches<\/a>&nbsp;made every second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The verb \u2018google\u2019, meaning \u2018to search for something online\u2019, has become so widely used that it was\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/just-google-it-a-short-history-of-a-newfound-verb\/\" target=\"_blank\">added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary<\/a>\u00a0and Oxford English Dictionary in Until 2005 the website celebrated its birthday on September 7, supposedly marking the day it became an incorporated company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/about.google\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">actually filed incorporation papers<\/a>&nbsp;on September 4, 1998, though it has never used this date as its birthday. Since 2005 it has marked its birthday on September 8, September 26 and, more recently, September 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen is Google\u2019s birthday? I\u2019m not sure even we know,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/doodles\/googles-15th-birthday\" target=\"_blank\">wrote Google employee Ryan Germick<\/a>\u00a0in 2013, adding: \u201cStill, while there\u2019s some differing opinions about when to bust out the candles and cake, one fun fact is that our first Doodle was posted even before Google was officially incorporated (30 August, 1998 vs 4 September, 1998).\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When was the world&#8217;s most popular search engine created?
